Jay Piscopo’s Capt’n Eli featured in new Reading With Pictures anthology

Deep off the coast of Tazmania, the distress call is sent: divers are trapped in a cave by a giant sea monster! Heeding the call in his mini-sub, the Dolphin, is Capt'n Eli, intrepid Sea Explorer and inventor. In the endless depths he discovers everything is not as it seems....

“The Goblin of the Deep” is a new 6-page Capt’n Eli story by Maine comic book artist Jay Piscopo. This story is featured in Reading With Pictures’ first anthology. “Reading with Pictures – Volume 1” is a full color, 192 page collection of works by more than 30 comic creators. Reading With Pictures is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that advocates the use of comics in the classroom to promote literacy and improve educational outcomes for all students. There is a trend in education towards using graphic novels as a teaching tool to motivate and inspire students. Comic books and graphic novels are now being used in classrooms as tools for teaching everything from early reading to course texts for college. Piscopo is the author and illustrator of “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli” graphic novel series and his new 6-page story “The Goblin of the Deep” is suitable for kids of all ages.

“Reading With Pictures – Volume 1” is available nationally at fine comic shops, including Casablanca Comics in Portland and Windham, Maine. The book can also be purchased in the store section of the Capt’n Eli website.

Nemo Publishing’s Sea Ghost collectible action figure contest winner announced

PORTLAND, MAINE (July 19, 2010) – Nemo Publishing announced the second winner of its Sea Ghost action figure contest. Cat Gough of Mona Vale, Australia is the winner of the second of three super-limited-edition Sea Ghost action figure prototypes.

The Sea Ghost is a character featured in Jay Piscopo’s graphic novel series “The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli,” published by Nemo Publishing.

Gough was selected at random from hundreds of people who purchased Commander X Mego-style action figures between Dec.15, 2008 and July 15, 2010.

The winner of the final Sea Ghost Mego-style action figure will be drawn Dec. 16, 2010. All customers who purchase Commander X figures prior to that date will be automatically entered into the final drawing.

More about Commander X:
In December 2008, Nemo Publishing released its first limited edition Mego-style action figure of the retro hero Commander X. There are four variants in this collection (Golden Age Commander X, 1950s Commander X, Western Knight, and the Barbary Knight) and more variants will be released in 2010.

Commander X is an integral character in “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli” graphic novels. He is an amnesiac who has been sent from the future to save the earth from inevitable destruction. He is a based on the Depression-era heroes of the comic book and movie serials of the 1930s.

This collectible figure is created in a retro-style reminiscent of figures made by the Mego Corporation in the 1970s. Piscopo is working with Paul Clarke, known as “Dr. Mego,” to create this collection and additional variants are planned for release in 2010.

Jay Piscopo at New Gloucester Public Library


Wednesday, June 29, 2010: On a beautiful Maine summer evening, Jay Piscopo presented his interactive comics drawing workshop for kids at the New Gloucester Public Library in picturesque New Gloucester, Maine.

The Capt'n Eli's Soda crew was also on hand to provide families with a taste of this Maine made soda.
