"Behind the tale of young Eli is writer / artist Jay Piscopo. On the storytelling side, Jay is top notch. He keeps the story simple and captivating with enough twists and turns to make you feel you’re a part of the story… not just reading it. On the artistic side it is one stunning visual after another. It’s like seeing new work from Alex Toth and Jack Kirby during their animation years." ~ Matt Herring, Secret Identity

Village Voice: Nerd-vana New York Comic-Con

John DeSio has a great wrap up of New York Comic-Con online in The Village Voice. Read his article HERE. Jay Piscopo and The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli got a nice mention!

...For a more family-friendly theme, one could turn to "The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli," which follows the exploits of a child inventor who, along with his dog and parrot, through a variety of high-tech capers. Series creator Jay Piscopo said that, while the series does contain many modern elements, he made a conscious effort to model his book after the heroes of the past, such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

"The old adventure comics, they featured very complicated stories told in a simple way," said Piscopo. "And we're trying to emulate that. We're trying to bring back that sense of fun that the Silver Age of comics, and the old newspaper comic strips brought." Eli has no powers, beyond his intelligence and ability to invent. "If he needs to fly, he'll invent something to fly with," said Piscopo.

February 3, 2009

It's not uncommon for new creators to take their darlings to a major comic convention with the hope of sparking interest among comics fans. But Jay Piscopo, writer and artist behind the graphic novel series, The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli (Volumes 1 and 2) has gone all-out in his effort to promote this new series from fledgling publisher, Nemo Publishing. Capitalizing on the nostalgia of comics fans (where even the youngest feel an intimate connection with the Golden and Silver Age eras, despite never having been there), Piscopo has worked with Paul Clarke of EMCE Toys to release Commander X, an action figure in the classic Mego style. Read the rest of the editorial HERE.

Look for the Commander X Action Figure, Jay Piscopo, and the Capt'n Eli crew in Booth 1927 at New York Comic-Con!
