Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli Holiday Tour Announced

(November 27, 2013 - Portland, Maine) Hot on the heels of Nemo Publishing's startling announcement that graphic novels are back in grocery stores, they have launched a new holiday tour.  Creator Jay Piscopo will be doing signings, sketches and more at Hannaford grocery stores, libraries and schools from now until January 2014. Maine native Jay Piscopo is the author and illustrator of “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli” graphic novel series. He is also the creator of “Sea Ghost #1: The Sea Ghost in the Machine” and “Commander X All Star Special” one-shot comic books, which he wrote and illustrated in his unique signature style, combining 2D characters with 3D backgrounds. He is a featured contributor in the Reading With Pictures anthology and a regular illustrator for Moonstone Books. Past projects include working as an art director at Tom Snyder Productions where he produced educational CD-ROMs, including the award-winning “Fizz and Martina’s Math Adventures,” and animated the ABC Saturday Morning show “Squigglevision.”

(Portland, ME-November  6, 2013) Nemo Publishing announced today a partnership with the Hannaford grocery chain to sell a special bundle pack of The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli graphic novels in the front end racks at 75 Hannaford stores all across New England.

Capt'n Eli is the son of the infamous Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.  The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli takes readers into a mesmerizing world of time travel, high-tech ships, flying mini-subs, robots, lost civilizations, and undersea empires in conflict accompanied by Jolly Roger, a 200-year-old parrot, and the faithful seadog Barney.

The bundle pack includes Books 1 and 2 in the series for $9.99.  Each book normally retails for $9.99 so this limited time special is buy-one-get-one-free and is offered only at Hannaford supermarkets.  Book 3 in the series is expected out in 2014.   

“A good grocery store is much more then just a place to buy food,” explains Ed Crockett, president of Capt’n Eli’s Soda. “They have become our drugstores and, based off the necessity and frequency we visit them, they are often our news stands. Hannaford is a forward thinking family grocer and realized that bringing in the Capt’n Eli graphic novel series was a great way to do more for their customers.”

This summer, Nemo Toys expanded its offerings beyond its popular retro-style Commander X action figures to include new, original characters as well as public domain heroes from the Golden Age.

New original characters Jack Danger and Rogue Agent Zero are included along with a reworking of the Golden Age hero The Red Panther.  Each of these figures are designed by Capt'n Eli and Commander X creator Jay Piscopo and assembled with the help of  Paul Clarke, DrMego.

Penny Kenny Reviews Commander X All-Star Special

Long-time comics reviewer and librarian Penny Kenny recently checked out Jay Piscopo's new "Commaner X All-Star Special." Here's what she has to say about this new comic book:

It was wonderful and terrible.

Wonderful because I really like how X works as a superhero type and a pulp hero type.  I love his attitude, which pretty much seems to be "Yep, another crazy day in the neighborhood.  Guess I'll just keep rolling with it."  

The only thing that's terrible about the issue is that I want more!  Now!

The set-up in each of these stories is well-done.  There's enough information to get the story going and to hint at a bigger story, without bogging things down.  And you still get an entire story in 9 pages or 11 or 16.  Can you tell I miss the old days of comics when you could have short stories that were still stories and not preludes to events?  

"Wake of the War-Beast" is probably my favorite by a hair.... Perfect.  I now want to see an extended version of this as an animated film. 

The art of course is great looking.  The yeti is especially impressive and the full-pager of "Little X" rising from the deep to tower over the fishing boat is superb.  Really looks like a movie poster.  The action scenes flow well and there's a sense of weight to the characters' movements...

I really want to know how all the pieces of the different stories fit together.  I want to know more about Lemuria and Atlantis and Circe and the rest of the Shiva missions and how Eli and X are connected.  So many questions waiting to be answered....
